10 New songs on my early-2017 playlist:
- Phoebe Bridgers – “Smoke Signals”
- Nahko and Medicine for The People (feat. Joseph) – “Directions”
- The Aces – “Stuck”
- Mondo Cozmo – “Hold on To Me”
- Amber Run – “Fickle Game”
- Chicano Batman – “Friendship (Is A Small Boat In A Storm)”
- CRX – “Ways To Fake It”
- Moses Sumney – “Lonely World”
- The Naked and Famous – “Higher”
- ARIZONA – “Oceans Away”
5 acts/bands I’m paying attention to in 2017:
- Mondo Cozmo – they have two singles (“Shine” and “Hold on To Me”) that are already getting quite a bit of rotation. Additionally, they’re playing at a host of festivals (Bonnaroo, Shaky Knees, Governors Ball). I caught their set at Hotel Cafe, and they were fantastic. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
- The Regrettes – I went to their sold-out record release party at The Echo last week. Keep an eye on them. They have a free show coming up at Amoeba in Hollywood.
- Moses Sumney – Give “Lonely World” a listen. Now, imagine an entire full-length album of that. We’re getting closer and closer.
- Chicano Batman – I really regret not seeing them the couple of times I had the chance to in 2016, because they’re about to get even bigger. They’re playing at Coachella this year.
- CRX – Same as #4. Had a ticket to their sold out show last year, but couldn’t make it. The band features Nick Valensi of The Strokes. If you like music from The Cars, give them a listen.
It’s still early, so this list will keep growing as I hear more music. If YOU have any music you’d like me to listen to, send it my way! I promise to try to keep this page consistently going this year. Other music notes:
- I’ll be at Bottlerock this year, which will feature headliners Tom Petty, Maroon 5, and the Foo Fighters. I’ll review some of the other bands as we get closer to Memorial Day Weekend.
- Outside Lands and KAABOO lineups will be out in March (hopefully)!
- Long Beach’s very own Music Tastes Good will also be running for its second year, later in September.
- Many, many more pictures to come! In the meantime, if you’re not already, follow me on Insta and Twitter: (@blogonjarvis), and Facebook (“Jarvis Johnson Music”). Cheers to the new year!
