The JarFIVE (Coachella Day 2 Edition)
- ROSALÍA – Rosalía is a massive global star, which I was reminded of when I went to Barcelona last year (she was born there). She’s headlining Primavera in Spain this year, and is the sub under BLACKPINK this year for Coachella. Coachella has done a great job of booking major Latin artists the last few festivals (Karol G, Bad Bunny, J Balvin), and continues this trend with one of the festival’s biggest bookings.
- Dinner Party – Since I mentioned boygenius in my blog last week, I’m going to focus on another supergroup that will be there on Saturday. It’s easy to look right over this jazz supergroup on the roster, but the lineup of Kamasi Washington, Robert Glasper, Terrace Martin, and 9th Wonder is one set not to miss. While all have released a lot of music individually (especially Glasper, who’s collaborated with a variety of artists), this collective is something special. They also have a new album coming out next Friday, as Weekend 1 begins.
- Charli XCX – Another fantastic dance/pop artist on this roster, Charli XCX was one performer I missed at Primavera last year. They had her at the opposite end of the festival, right after Dua Lipa‘s headlining performance. What a travesty. She is one artist that’s been on my list for quite some time, but I’ve just never had the chance to see her. This set will be packed, so I’m hoping they put her on one of the bigger stages.
- Diljit Dosanjh – I’ll be honest; I learned about Diljit Dosanjh because one of my former students was in his music video (see below). I came to find out that not only is he a huge Indian pop star, but also a big actor. While his name may not be instantly recognizable to most fans in this US, this is most definitely a rare opportunity to catch a star of this magnitude at a massive American festival. Also, my former student is awesome: check out her Instagram account here.
- The Breeders – For my fifth choice, I’m going with a group that I couldn’t believe was so low on this lineup. I had to doublecheck their social media to make sure it was them playing! But it is the legendary Breeders. I’m listing them because in a way, they (along with Bjork and Chemical Brothers) symbolize what Coachella represented when it started. I caught their set once in 2018, and I’ll be catching them again this year. Let the nostalgia flow.
Other music news for 4/7…
- Ohana Fest today announced that their 2023 lineup will be released on Tuesday 4/11 at 8am PT. You can sign up for a presale code now, with the presale beginning Thursday April 13 at 10am PT. This festival is co-planned by Eddie Vedder, and I’ve only been once for one day. But I had a good time with my sister – we saw Pearl Jam, Brandi Carlile, Sharon Van Etten, Yola, and others. It’s worth checking out if you’re not too far from Orange County. Here’s their Instagram link.
- Artists Kaytranada and Aminé have announced a new duo, Kaytramine. They announced on their social that a new single will be out tonight, featuring Pharrell. I’ve seen both artists individually live, and Kaytranada will also be at Coachella this year. Does that mean we’ll see an appearance from Aminé? And maybe even Pharrell?
- Last week I highlighted one of my favorite artists in LA, Mae Deline, and she has a new music video out today for her latest track “Future You Future Me.” The artistic muse is strong in her latest work. Give it a view!
I have so much more to write about, and will. My goal is to post a couple times a week, as we head into festival season. I’m also going to devote more space on here for up and coming artists. If you know of any artists you would like me to check out, shoot me an email (blogonjarvis@gmail.com). Thanks again for your support! 😀
