  1. Just Like Heaven lineup is out!

The fourth installment of Just Like Heaven released its stacked lineup this week. I bought a ticket today, so I may see some of you at this event in mid-May. If people are wondering where indie acts are on the Coachella lineup, they can look at this other Goldenvoice event for some answers. Here are some highlights:

  1. The Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie continue their very popular tour from last year.
  2. The War on Drugs are one of the main reasons I’m going. They’re fantastic live, and I last saw them in Pomona in 2014.
  3. I’m blown away that Warpaint and Broken Social Scene are that far down on a lineup. I remember first seeing Warpaint (also in 2014) at Outside Lands.
  4. The biggest issue with this lineup? There’s too many good acts on here, and there will definitely be conflicts. But that’s a good problem to have. And the lineup is not as overly crowded as the other one-day festival on sale today, the sold out Friends and Lovers.
  1. Beachlife lineup is also out

The Redondo Beach festival is back (on my birthday weekend) with perhaps the most random festival lineup this season. Here are some highlights:

  1. Sting headlining a US festival is something I haven’t seen since KAABOO in Texas. But I’m here for it.
  2. On that same note, seeing Seal on an American lineup is quite a nostalgic get for me personally. His first two albums were two favorites of the 90’s.
  3. The undercard includes some artists I haven’t really seen on other lineups yet (City and Color, Devo, Local Natives, Courtney Barnett). Again, the variety makes this a tempting event.
  1. The Smile release their second album, “Wall of Eyes.”

Back in 2022, I was lucky enough to catch a live set of The Smile in Spain at Primavera (picture below), right after the release of their first album. Today, they released their second album, “Wall of Eyes.” The trio, consisting of Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood, are more than just a Radiohead side project. After one spin, there’s more coherence here than the first album, and some absolute bangers (the previously released “Bending Hectic,” and the album closer “You Know Me!”). The album can be streamed on Apple and Spotify, via this Consequence article. Pitchfork gave it a glowing review. I took the pic of Thom Yorke below in Spain.

  1. Psychedelic Symphony’ in Long Beach

Worlds collide here in Long Beach, right before Valentine’s Day. Presented by Happy Sundays and Heritage Restaurant and Farm, this Psychedelic Symphony is the dreamy mix of sound, visuals, and and tasting. Julia Kugel and Scott Montoya (who put on Happy Sundays), answer some questions about the event here. Additionally, Heritage recently won a Michelin star, and is run by sibling duo Philip and Lauren Pretty (Lauren was a former student of mine at Long Beach State, so I’m incredibly happy for her!) At the time of this blog, there are still some tickets available, but they are very limited.

  1. Acoustic set from Ty Segall in Long Beach

On Wednesday, Ty Segall made an appearance at Fingerprints Music in Long Beach to promote his new album, “Three Bells.” He performed an almost hour-long solo acoustic set, mixing in new cuts with older tracks. Afterward, he took time to sign albums, take pics, and chat with fans. I don’t usually have much to say to artists when I meet them (aside from ‘thank you’), but I did tell him that Coachella needs him on their lineup (I last saw him there in 2019). He responded that he would love to be back there. There’s your cue, Coachella – give him a call. Here are some pics from Wednesday.
