- Brittany Howard’s new album “What Now”
Brittany Howard’s latest album gives me another reason to look forward to Coachella in two months. After teasing the record with the electronic single “Prove It To You,” the album demonstrates more variety from the enigmatic artist. While I may never get to see her perform Alabama Shakes songs live again, this album is setting up for a legendary performance in April. Give it a listen.
- 2. Little Simz’ new EP “Drop 7”
Speaking of enigmatic, you should also check out UK rapper Little Simz’ latest album “Drop 7” (an EP of 7 songs). She was on my bingo card to play Coachella this year, but unfortunately, she’s not playing. The closest was being a guest during Gorillaz’ set last year. Her first new release since 2022 is futuristic, and the first track “Mood Swings” is a banger. How she hasn’t blown up here in the US is a mystery to me.
- Dua Lipa’s new single, “Training Season”
Earlier this year, I would have sworn Dua Lipa was going to headline Coachella, putting her at the top of my bingo card. But then it was rumored that she wasn’t going to be ready. Working with Kevin Parker (Tame Impala) has given her new music a different flair from “Future Nostalgia,” her previous album. I like this new single more than the first (“Houdini”).
- Devon Ross’ new EP “Oxford Gardens”
I regret being under the weather this week, because I really wanted to catch Devon Ross’ appearance at Amoeba on Valentine’s Day, where she performed (she’ll be at the one in San Francisco today!). I’m not sure how I stumbled on her social media, but I’m glad I did. Known also for her acting and modeling, I grew interested in her guitar driven indie/punk sound. She’s also releasing music on Thurston Moore’s (Sonic Youth) label. I then learned that she’s the daughter of Craig Ross, long time guitarist and friend of Lenny Kravitz. Badass all around. Here’s an interview with Ross. Give the EP a listen.
- Beth Gibbons’ single “Floating On A Moment”
The latest work from the voice of the legendary band Portishead was a nice surprise. I know that she’s scheduled to perform at Primavera in Barcelona this year, but knowing there’s also new music coming is even better. While this makes me want another Portishead album, at least we’re getting a full album from her in the future. And this is a dope single – that bass sets us straight from the start. Give it a listen.
Fool in Love Fest
As a bonus, the Fool in Love fest was announced earlier this week. If this were a 2 or 3-day fest, it would instantly be my favorite. But all falling on one day makes it tough to see so many acts, with so many people in the crowd. This is another in a long line of one-day fests, aimed at a demographic of fans, filled with too many great acts. But it’s still awesome. If you’re interested, the presale started at 10am, and the code is LOVE. There were still tickets at the time of this blog, though prices go up with each tier.
