March on.

  1. St Vincent’s new single “Broken Man”

St. Vincent is back with the lead of single for her upcoming album. This single reminds me of Nine Inch Nails, and sounds great. This is her first self-produced album, and includes friends like Dave Grohl and Josh Freese, among others. The video for the song has sparked some controversy among fans, given the timing of its release. The album will be out April 26, and I’m set to see her in late May at Bottlerock.

  1. Gesaffelstein’s new single, “Hard Dreams”

I was fortunate to see Gesaffelstein twice back in 2019, as both of his performances were jaw-droppingly good. One of those sets was at Coachella, and he’ll be returning next month. His first single from his upcoming album immediately reminds me of electronic legends Depeche Mode and their icy sound. Give him a listen below!

  1. New festival lineups released this week

A host of festival lineups were released this week, highlighting the variety of artists, while also demonstrating how festivals have become more focused on specific demographics. These states range from Oregon to Maryland to Nevada. Additionally Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson will be touring together, with various artists joining them. They’ll be at the Hollywood Bowl on July 31, with John Mellencamp and Brittney Spencer. Tickets are on sale now.

  1. Singer-songwriter Angie McMahon is appearing at Fingerprints on 3/16.

I’m excited about this appearance. I’ve recently discovered Angie McMahon and her music, and she’s stopping into Fingerprints this month, for a signing and stripped-down live performance. This set will be one day after her sold out appearance at Troubadour. Her most recent album is intimate (at times reminding of Phoebe Bridgers and Florence), while her song “Letting Go” recalls The War on Drugs. “Fireball Whiskey” is ethereal. But her voice is all her own, and that is what I’m drawn to the most. Come watch, if you’re local!

  1. Mannequin Pussy releases their new album “I Got Heaven”

Pitchfork gave an 8.8 to their ‘best new album,’ Mannequin Pussy‘s “I Got Heaven.” The lead single starts out things in a fantastic fashion, and the album never lets up. For some reason, I’m reminded of Courtney Barnett. I’ll need a few more listens to fully embrace it, but my first listen was good one. Check out the singles below, and their full album on Spotify.

Bonus Tasting

ScHoolboy Q and Freddie Gibbs together on ‘oHio’

All morning, I’ve been listening to the newly awaited album from ScHoolboy Q. When I’d read he was featuring Freddie Gibbs, I jumped to that track. This song reminded me of what I love in hip hop, regardless of era. Also, I caught the Coltrane sample in there. Give it a listen!

The Tasting RoomHermanos Gutiérrez

For this edition of The Tasting Room, I want to highlight an act that I plan on seeing at Coachella. They’re going to be opening for Khruangbin on their upcoming tour. I gave them a good listen on Sunday, as I went on a long walk. I felt like I was walking through a movie soundtrack of an old Western. Or a Tarantino film. Their bio on Spotify reads as much: “Taking influence from 1950’s Latin America sound they transfer the listeners to journeys through beautiful landscapes.” Their music is instrumental, and their most recent effort finds them working with producer Dan Auerbach (of the Black Keys). If you like, Khruangbin, you’ll appreciate Hermanos Gutiérrez. I’ve including some of their work below, including their latest single “Sonido Cósmico,” part of their album of the same name, due on June 14. Tix can be purchased here.

I can see myself spending some summer days, tasting some reds, and cooling to the soundtrack of their guitars. Enjoy!

Vintage Pour

On this day 30 years ago, Nirvana would play what would be their last live set in Munich, Germany. Their last song was “Heart Shaped Box,” the audio of which was captured in this YouTube clip. RIP Kurt.
