The Boss at the beach.

JarFive

  1. Big Boi and Andre 3000 meet up

Even if Big Boi was just showing up to support his former Outkast partner, it immediately conjured hope of a reunion. As André 3000 indicated in an interview on Questlove Supreme (link below), he’s quite content doing his solo gig. So much so that he’s also booked for The Roots Picnic (lineup below). The two last did a reunion tour together in 2014, where they headlined Coachella and the second Bottlerock.

  1. Brittany Howard appears on ‘Questlove Supreme’ podcast

Speaking of Questlove Supreme, the most recent episode out this week features Brittany Howard. I featured Howard’s new album as part of my JarFive a couple weeks back, so I was excited to she’s the guest on one of my favorite podcasts. Howard will be playing Coachella next month.

  1. The Boss is headlining ‘Sea.Hear.Now.’ fest in Asbury Park.

Since I started going to music festivals in 2013, Bruce Springsteen hasn’t headlined any American festivals. The closest was Bonnaroo in 2009. And now he’s set to headline the 2-day Sea.Hear.Now Festival in his home state New Jersey, in Asbury Park. While I wouldn’t normally be interested, the thought of seeing him on the beach in Asbury Park sounds like one of those events you can’t miss. As it turns out, I was able to buy a ticket yesterday during the presale ($265 for GA). Tix sold out quickly and now you can find them on Stubhub for nearly twice as much. There are some other highlights on this lineup, but Noah Kahan (whose festival success continues) pales next to the Sunday headliner. I am low-key excited to see Robert Randolph on that Saturday. Last time I saw him was an opener for Dave Matthews Band in 2006. A blog will definitely follow after that weekend.

  1. The Marías have new single, “Run Your Mouth.”

The Marías gave us a taste of their upcoming album “Submarine” (out on May 31, 2024). This album is the first since 2021’s “CINEMA,” and a Coachella appearance in 2022. Since their last album, they’ve collaborated with Bad Bunny, Coco, and Still Woozy. Looking forward to this album release, to usher in the summer.

Throwback pic I took, The Marías at Outside Lands in 2019.
  1. Kim Gordon releases new album “The Collective”

Is noise-trap a genre? Kim Gordon attaches her poetry to some heavy beats on this latest album. Her first single “BYE BYE” showed some of those trap beats with poetry. But the heaviness doesn’t stop there. Some pretty cool arrangements, if you’re looking for something further from the middle. Not the smoothest listen, but that’s the point.

The Tasting RoomZoë Fromer

For this edition of the Tasting Room, I want to highlight an artist that was recommended to me by Instagram. New York-based Zoë Fromer caught my ear with her catchy songs, and sultry, yet rocking vocal style. Video of her performances show a dynamic artist that engages the band and the audience. I would also check her music out if you like the group Cannons, but with more of a rock edge. Personal recommendation for cuts: “Part Time Lover” (below) and “Can’t Run Away. ” In fact, give the entire “Permission” EP a listen. My biggest hope is that she makes her way out to the LA area, so I can see her live and take some pics of her artistry in action. Give her a listen, a follow, and show some support!

Vintage Pour

Today’s vintage throwback is actually two pours. Thirty years ago today, two albums were released that helped define the era: Nine Inch Nails‘ “The Downward Spiral” and Soundgarden‘s “Superunknown.” The former showed that industrial darkness could have mass appeal, and even a charismatic voice behind it. The latter found the hard rock/Zep riffs of a band from the northwest, with one of the greatest rock vocalists, having their commercial moment in the (black hole) sun. Be sure to give both of these records a spin, and the videos below a view, in celebration of these classics. RIP Chris Cornell.
