On the most recent episode of my podcast, my friend Frank sits in, as we sip scotch and recount Day 3 of Bottlerock. Since I’ve already talked about Bottlerock in the previous episode and blog, I’ll be focusing on the music and musicals that Frank and I discussed, with links below. Thanks for subscribing.
Frank mentioned this song from the 60’s as an early childhood memory.
He also mentioned this song, as reminding him of an ex-girlfriend. This song was the Grammy-winning record of the year in 1976, and written by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield.
Frank also mentioned Tom Waits as being a distinct college memory. Here’s one of his better-known songs, “Hold On.”
Send In The Musicals
Frank and I also had a conversation about musicals, so I’ve included some bits from the musicals he mentioned. Remember: if you’ve never heard Sondheim, remedy that now!
I mentioned the Beatles having recorded a version of “Till There Was You,” originally from “The Music Man.” Here’s a live version of the song, highlighting the pop appeal of the song. Also, George Harrison has a nice bit on the guitar.
Frank mentioned the song “Tonight At Eight,” from the musical “She Loves Me.”
Another favorite song mentioned, was the title song from “She Love Me.”
He also mentioned this song as an example of a good ‘patter song,’ from the legendary Stephen Sondheim.
Another favorite was this lesser-known “Cop Song” from the musical “Urinetown.” (Don’t let the name fool you.)
We talked about Frank Sinatra covering Sondheim’s “Send in The Clowns,” showing that there could be pop appeal coming from his songs. The song was originally from “A Little Night Music.”
Another song Frank mentioned from “A Little Night Music” was “Every Day a Little Death.”
We of course briefly brought up “Into The Woods,” the Sondheim classic that Frank himself had appeared in, when we were in high school.
We started with “The Music Man,” so makes sense to end with it. Also while in high school, Frank played the lead seen here by Robert Preston in the movie.
Next week, this blog will be back to the format of highlighting new music and artists. Thanks for listening to the podcast, and reading!
