Parasocial Relationships, Liquid Death, and Tushita!

Here are the links/references for the latest podcast episode (7/4). Hope you had a good 4th!

  1. George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” turned 100 years old this year.
  1. Happy birthday to Stephen Foster the ‘father of American Music,’ born on July 4, 1826.
“Beautiful Dreamer” is one of his most known songs, still used everywhere. It was also the last song he wrote before he passed.
Looney Tunes is where I remember hearing Foster songs. Here’s Elmer Fudd singing “Oh Susanna,” with lyrics rewritten for the cartoon, which came out in 1942. The original lyrics included a very racist second verse.
  1. Bruce Springsteen’s “Born In The USA” album is 40 years old this year. The title track is one of the most misunderstood tracks in pop music. I’ve also included the acoustic version mentioned in the episode.

4. Another 4th of July track, Jimi Hendrix’s rendition of the Star Spangled Banner from Woodstock (1969).

  1. Sufjan Stevens wrote his song “Fourth of July,” from his “Carrie & Lowell” album, about his mother dying from cancer.
